Muskoka, Ontario, Canada – Where I live

Ontario

The amazing beauty of the area that I live and work.

For two years in a row, National Geographic has ranked Muskoka in the top 10 places to visit worldwide. Muskoka was NUMBER ONE of 10 best trips of summerWorldwide in 2011.

In Eastern Canada, "cottage country" covers any lake destination within easy driving distance for a quick weekend getaway. Central Ontario's Muskoka district is close to Toronto—about two hours north—while still offering an unplugged pace that's a world away from Canada's largest city. The 2,500-square-mile natural playground includes 8,699 miles of shoreline; 17 historic towns and villages; and countless waterfalls and lakes bordered by the granite peaks of Algonquin Provincial Park to the east and the 30,000 islands of Georgian Bay Islands National Park to the west. Spend the day paddle boarding on Muskoka Lake or exploring the Riverwalk and shops of Canada's waterfall capital, Bracebridge. For an old-school family vacation, head north to Peninsula Lake's Pow-Wow Point Lodge, a 91-year-old, all-inclusive resort featuring simple summer pleasures like campfires, canoeing, and volleyball. Plan an August visit to catch Algonquin Park's educational Thursday evening wolf howls starring—weather-permitting—the reclusive, inhabitant, four-pawed chorus.

Ontario

Just two hours by car—but a world away—from Torontobeats the heart of Ontario's cottage country, Muskoka. Families have gathered here for generations to revel in true wilderness. The 2,500-square-mile area includes 8,699 miles of shoreline, 17 historic towns and villages, and innumerable waterfalls and lakes (like Kahshe Lake-shown). There's plenty to do. Attend an E-Club meeting! Lounge with friends, barbecue everything, watch the night sky from the dock in the pitch black, play board games while listening to the rain. And run around barefoot all day. Some of the "cottagers" are Eddie and Alex Van HalenMike WeirNancy DolmanSteven SpielbergTom Hanks,Kevin O'LearyDerek Roy.

A sample of "cottages" that Jay sells:

This is a "cottage" on the beach! Lake, Woods, what else do you need?
Isolated "Cottage." No road? Beautiful wooded setting.

Interested? Jay will make any Rotarian a great deal. Great place to be a member of an E-Club.

3. Algonquin Provincial Park - Through the Seasons

This is one beautiful area of Canada, known as the Playground of Ontario, world famous Algonguin Provincial Park. Algonguin Park is 20 some miles from where I live.

4. Winter time in Ontario

I suppose I am a true northern girl. As much as I love summer and boating, winter is perhaps my favourite season. The temperature recently was -39 C. The propane at my office wasn't working--at minus -40 C (also – 40 F.), propane will not convert to a liquid. In spite of that, the sun was shining and it was a remarkably beautiful winter's day.

A week later. It is a beautiful sunny day here. A balmy -12C ... but feeling more like -23C with the wind chill. Even though the lake is frozen and lots of snow, the buyers are early. The forecast is bright and sunny with a high of -10C. A perfect day to hit the cross country or downhill ski trails, do some snowmobiling, ice fishing or snowshoeing. Then in by the fire for a hot chocolate (or a rum toddy).

Road and traffic conditions might not be conducive to driving.

Notice none of the cars are exceeding the speed limit!

A bit further North in Ontario, there can be some amazing experiences in the area.
