Our second program this month on Basic Education and Literacy Month highlights the Guatemala Literacy Project.

To celebrate its 100th year, The Rotary Foundation recognized 20 global grants that exemplify what a project should be: a sustainable endeavor that aligns with one of Rotary’s areas of focus and is designed in cooperation with the community to address a real need. One of these exemplary grants was Improving Literacy in Guatemala, a program that has been ongoing for two decades.  The host club is the Rotary Club of Guatemala Vista Hermosa, which has collaborated through the years with more than 500 other Rotary Clubs and the non-profit organization Cooperative for Education (CoEd).

Each year, a new global grant from The Rotary Foundation extends the effort to another 40 or so primary schools and a dozen middle schools selected after meetings with community leaders, parents, teachers, and administrators. More than 480 clubs in Guatemala, the United States, Canada, Cayman Islands, England, and Japan have provided financial support. Every year, about 50 Rotary volunteers take part by delivering materials and visiting classrooms.

The latest global grant was co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Summit County (Frisco), Colorado.  The total budget for the recent grant was $339,191. It provided textbooks, computer labs, teacher training and scholarships to impoverished schools. It benefitted nearly 6,000 students and nearly 340 teachers. As a result of the program first graders in these schools scored 71 percent higher than the national average in letter recognition.
