The Four Way Test

President's Message

Ken Meyer

President 2020-2021
Greetings fellow Rotarians and guests!
Welcome to the Rotary E-Club of One World!

Dear Rotary E-Club of One World,
As we look forward to the month of February, remember that it is recognized by Rotary International as “Peace Building and Conflict Prevention Month.”
At https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/promoting-peace is a significant statement of Rotary’s emphasis on peacebuilding and conflict prevention:
"Today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children.
We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
As a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.
By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Our commitment to peacebuilding today answers new challenges: how we can make the greatest possible impact and how we can achieve our vision of lasting change. We are approaching the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity, broadening the scope of what we mean by peacebuilding, and finding more ways for people to get involved.
Rotary creates environments where peace can happen.”
As the Rotary E-Club of One World, we have a wonderful history of working to promote peace.  At present, under the leadership of our Incoming President, Pat Fisher, the efforts of our club continue to advance for the placement of Peace Poles in the communities where we live.
Please consider what you can do to help Pat with this project, particularly in the month of February.

Hope is on the way with new vaccines being distributed
Instead of the usual interview with a speaker, this program will contain 2 articles to read at your convenience and 1 video created by a doctor. When I saw that we did not have a person to interview I was thinking what is it that has given us all hope after this strange year we all had. Well, I believe hope came the moment we knew that vaccines were being distributed around the world. However, we also realize that not all countries have the means to buy vaccines, so I decided to look into interesting articles on the vaccines.
I found one article on the Middle East and the reluctance to share vaccines with each other.
Here is the link: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/01/12/israel-palestine-coronavirus-vaccine-disparity-analysis/
The article says it all... a very good read.
The next article is quite different... here it is a matter of buying your way in getting the vaccine.
Again the article shows a totally different dilemma.
And lastly, I want to share with you a video made by a doctor in the Netherlands (please put the video in English subtitles).
Here is the link: https://youtu.be/nWC0loLNd4k
or the embedded version for your convenience. This video explains how a vaccine is made and why this one has been created so fast.
Enjoy a different program!
