The Four Way Test

President's Message

Ozlem Kocanaogullari
President 2019-2020
Greetings fellow Rotarians and guests!
Welcome to the Rotary E-Club of One World!
Dear Fellow OWR Members,

I hope that you are all in good health.

The world is going through a crisis as we have never seen before. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit humanity; and has spared no nation, no race, no gender, no ethnicity, no religion untouched. We are equally vulnerable and equally helpless in front of this disease.

The situation locally, in the country where I live is that the disease is just on the rise. Turkey has 1872 active cases, 44 dead and 26 recovered. The government is concerned that the numbers will continue to rise; therefore some precautions have been taken. All schools are closed and the students are now taught online. All movie theaters, concerts, plays, social gatherings are closed, canceled, or postponed indefinitely. Banks, grocery stores are open half day. Courthouses are closed and judiciary deadlines are postponed. Any and all individuals over 65 or any individuals with chronic diseases are required by law to stay at home. They are fined if caught outside. We are expecting a curfew for all people any day.
I personally live with my mother now and we have very little outside interaction. I have closed my law office and work online only. I shop for groceries twice a week, wear face masks and gloves, and come back home as quickly as I can. This situation obviously will protect us for some time, but we are told that we will catch this disease sooner or later. When we do, we can only hope that it will not be fatal. We have stocked on some off-the-counter flu medicine and made some plans on if/when either of us will get sick. The news takes its toll on us if not anything psychologically. We are aware that we may very well need to keep this new lifestyle up for at least another month or two. It is difficult to comprehend how we will survive this way of living for such an amount of time, but we rather try to take it one day at a time.
I am quite sure that the situation is not too different for most of you. We are all afraid, all feel isolated, we are all concerned for the future, but we are not alone in this. This disease will go away in one way or another. Once it does, we will still have to face what it seems like a very serious case of global economic crisis. We will build our lives back up again, we will work hard, and we will help each other out.

We as Rotarians have many tools to deal with most of the impediments and difficulties that humankind will face in the upcoming months. We have organizational skills. We have a network. We have funds. We have the volunteer spirit. We have seen disasters maybe on a smaller scale, and we have at times disregarded our own needs to help out others in greater need.
I know that Rotary International is also working on projects that can help out people in the world. We as an e-club have other advantages too, we are familiar with online meetings and we know how to use technology to communicate with Rotarians halfway around the world. We are also accustomed to organizing projects online and seeing them through till the end. We have a better (wider) network than most other Rotary clubs. Surely, this is a good time for us to put those advantages into good use.
The one and foremost thing that is asked of us, as people of the world, is to stay home and isolate ourselves. People of the world are at home, alone. People are at home, with their families. People are at home, unable to get to their loved ones. People are at home, desperate to get news from their sick relatives in the hospital. We can help them connect. We can help them feel better. We can help them understand we are not alone. And captivity will not last forever.
I will try to reach out to each one of you again this time to discuss this matter solely. I would very much like to check up on you, see how you are surviving this difficult time. I would then also like to hear your ideas on how we as members of One World Rotary E-Club can help out others.
Please feel free to text me, email me, call me. I am always at home.
Please.. you too. Stay at home & stay safe.
