Across the world, Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is the largest killer of children under five years of age, contributing to nearly half of all childhood deaths.  Defined by a very low weight to height ratio, visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional edema, an estimated 20 million children suffer from SAM, and malnutrition contributes to the death of more than 3 million children a year.  In a nutshell (peanut pun intended), Project Peanut Butter (PPB) helps communities manufacture and distribute a peanut based formula that when fed to children with SAM has a 95% full recovery rate.  Currently 11 Rotary Districts and over 150 clubs participate in PPB where they are able to save one child for about $25.00!

Project Peanut Butter is dedicated to producing fully sustainable programs to treat children who are dying of SAM.  The cure for SAM is a peanut - based formula called RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food) that is 95% effective in curing SAM Disease.  It is the treatment of choice by WHO (World Health Organization), UNICEF, USAid,  Doctors without Boarders and all other health programs throughout the world.  This program is developed from the ground up with farms, transportation, factories, clinics (mobile and stationary) and education programs for the families.  Project Peanut Butter works with the country’s government and all the world health care programs.  Once the program is set up, the ongoing funding is arranged through contracts with WHO, UNICEF, USAid, the country’s Government Health Programs.

The problem is that none of the world health programs will pay for startup or for expanding existing programs. They will fund existing programs.  That’s where Rotary comes in with Global Grants.

Clinics all over the world are using RUTF from profit making companies under other names, but is the same formula. Once a program is developed or the factory has expanded its production, the clinics can expand into new areas.
