Are you an honest person?”

Nearly all of us will answer “yes” to this question. And yet - to be completely honest - when pressed, we would have to admit that complete honesty is a hard bar to clear.  Few of us have never told a “little white lie,” whether to save face or to spare the feelings of another person.  There have been several funny movies based on this premise ( Liar, Liar; and The Invention of Lying to name but two).

In this 2012 lecture given at the RSA, Dan Ariely, the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, discusses the Truth about Dishonesty.  Ariely is the author of the bestselling books Predictably Irrational, The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, and Irrationally Yours. His insights into human behavior are grounded in extensive research.  The results of this research are both vastly interesting and entertaining.
