The Internet of Things

Certainly you've embraced the Internet. You wouldn't be taking in a Rotary club program here at One World Rotary unless you understood the power of connectedness. The internet, really just making it's way into widespread use in the last two decades, now enables a rotary club membership to quite literally span the entire globe--a membership that crosses nationally boundaries and the international date line to unite in service to the world.

But the internet connects more than people. It connects things too. Perhaps, like me, you have a smart electric meter attached to your house that helps the utility better manage its business and tailor services to your custom needs. Maybe you have a Nest thermostat that can be controlled by your smart phone, turning on the the air conditioner when you leave work so that the house will be cool by the time you get home.

Well, there's a name for these applications where devices independently communicate information and are remotely controlled. It's called the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things has really only just begun to transform our lives. Consider the scenarios in this next video and imagine how the technology might change the way you live.

These aren't just crazy dreams. Here are some real world products that were highlighted at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

The Internet of Things isn't just about cool home automation. It's truly transforming the world all around us, so let's close with this infographic about how it will change every aspect of our lives.
